FROM PLANET ROCKWALL
Rockwall Summer Musicals is proud to have completed their 5th season, producing ten shows over the last five years. Bringing to the community favorites such as Oklahoma!, The Sound of Music, South Pacific, West Side Story, and Guys and Dolls has been a mission of the organization, and this summer’s lineup promises to be the most challenging yet.
RSM will begin the 2016 season with Rodgers & Hammerstein’s masterpiece Carousel. With a lush score and seamless integration of song, story and dance, Carousel is a magical tale of love, loss and redemption. Richard Rodgers considered this his personal favorite of all their musicals, and Time Magazine dubbed it "the best musical of the 20th Century." Unforgettable songs include "If I Loved You," "You'll Never Walk Alone" and "Carousel Waltz." Performances are June 24-26 and July 1-3.
The second show of the season is Mary Poppins, based on the similarly titled series of children's books by P. L. Travers and the 1964 Disney film. Using a little bit of discipline, a spoonful of sugar and whole lot of magic, the quintessential nanny reacquaints the Banks family with the things that matter most in life. The script calls for several magical stage effects, including characters flying above the stage. Performances are August 12-14 and 18-20.
In addition to presenting the area with quality live theatrical experiences, RSM’s mission involves students in all aspects of theatre through mentoring, which gives them a chance to work with theater professionals backstage and onstage as they learn theatre crafts. Since inception, RSM has involved over 600 locally-based students, many of whom have gone on to pursue acting or production opportunities in California and New York. Additionally, RISD receives significant revenues from RSM for the rental of the RHS Performing Arts Center at Utley.
Community and corporate partnerships are integral to keeping the arts alive in Rockwall. Not only has RSM brought exceptional theatre to our midst, they have partnered with Helping Hands, Boys & Girls Clubs, and are aligned with Rockwall Art League by hosting art shows during performances.
RSM depends primarily on ticket sales and donations, both individual and corporate. Over the years the organization has seen significant increases in production and facility costs, licensing fees, and orchestra costs, which have tripled.
Individuals and businesses can help support RSM by underwriting a portion of Rockwall Summer Musicals' 2016 season. Visit the RSM website for more information.
